Motivate Your Employees The Right Way

If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.

All business managers want a motivated and enthused workforce. But the question is, how does a business manager correctly motivate his workforce? A usual set of “correct guides” for stimulating a workforce includes exhortations to sympathize with the employees and discover what these employees want from their jobs.

Although this guide seems quite noticeable, the hard part is for managers finding that time to do so. Majority of entrepreneurs and managers have a huge workload of their own. Having a spare time to talk to one employee from one another in an effort to draw out from employees their dreams and hopes.

Another way to motivate your workforce is to offer them flexibility. Flexibility is offering your staff bigger power over their working environment and workload. This means that you can offer your employees flexi-time and home working options. Yes, this may again seem simple and easy to do but offering this kind of policy means having to think and plan this policy. Some employees are not comfortable with flexi-time or the idea of working at home, or perhaps some of the tasks assigned to them simply can’t be carried and done at home.

To motivate your employees, offer on-the-job learning. Modern workers are more anxious now to learn a new skill or two and this is a praise-worthy goal and should be encouraged. However, you have to make sure that the acquisition of these new skills is not costly, and does not impact the employees’ working hours.

Other managers want to motivate their employees by instilling fear. Most employees fear of losing their jobs if they do not perform well but this is not a good form of motivation. Money can also be a motivational factor but not at all times. If as a manager you know what motivates you to work, remember that various people are motivated by different things. You need to know and understand what turns your employees on.

If you want to motivate people to become better workers, as managers it is important that you help them enjoy what they are doing. You can help motivate them to like their work by giving your employees more decision-making powers,  more challenge, more variety, and more room for creativity.

Haven’t you heard that familiarity breeds contempt? You can motivate your workforce by making their work more interesting. Boredom is a major de-motivator. Help your employees realize their potential. When people are excited with their work, they come to the office more alive, work differently, speak differently. You can tell the difference because there is “spring in their steps”.
