Motivate Your Bored Employee

Vu Manh Thang - I Am Superman

bored worker

How do you motivate people to accomplish boring and repetitive work? First, let’s define a “boring work”.  A boring task is a task that demands little thinking or skill; a task in which a worker has little or no control over what work is done; a task that a worker has no room for decision-making.

The feeling of boredom normally disturbs people employed to work on stack supermarket shelves, clean offices, drive trucks, etc.  A monotonous work, according to research, increases a person’s risk of developing musculoskeletal disorder.  Easing the monotony of your employee can save them from work-related stress and pain, and save your business from un-productivity.

There are a lot of reasons why work can be boring. It’s important that your worker sees value and importance on the task/job that he is doing.  Some of the boring jobs in the world are described as smelly, unsafe, dirty, and stressful with terrible work schedules.  To motivate your worker, regularly remind him of the importance of his job and how valuable his input is for your business, or the society in general.

Maybe your worker is bored because he feels undervalued. To cure this, you have to make sure that your worker feels valued in the company, or in the organization.  A bored worker feels that his job is of low or no value at all – meaningless and monotonous.  Acknowledge publicly (e.g. memo, meetings, assembly, etc.) the worker’s good work. This will motivate him to work more and be more productive.

Provide your worker to have power over his work. Ask your worker what you can do to make the work more interesting or challenging for him.  You can create self-directed teams where workers are given responsibilities like managing their work methods and processes. Doing so will help boost job stimulation and will decrease boredom.

It is important to motivate your workers especially if they feel bored doing tedious tasks.  Offer your workers more satisfying jobs by increasing retention of seasoned workers and motivating them to perform at their full potential.  You can also motivate them by adding more skills that your workers can use while accomplishing their tasks, giving them feedback and increasing appreciation for doing a job well done.

Remember, “People who enjoy what they are doing invariably do it well.”
