How to Inspire Other People

inspire others

Your ability to influence other people depends on the language you choose carefully when speaking. We can learn from the great speech-makers and orators, and from psychology and how language works. This is not about manipulating facts and truths.

To inspire, you have to be honest. People will admire your truthfulness. However, there are several easy adjustments you can make to your selection of language which will boost the likelihood that your listeners will be inspired.

Changes in language will work in two ways: a) they will give power to your audience; b) prevent damaging your message.

1)    When speaking, use “we”.  It is more inspiring for your listeners if you use “we” instead of the isolated “I”. Famous speakers such as Barack Obama, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, and Gandhi use inclusive language.

2)    Illustrate a convincing future. Offer as much details as you can.  Inspired people aim for better future.

3)    Use sensory language to engage the attention you want from your listeners. Choose the right words that completely appeal to your listener’s senses. Use visual words, aural words, and kinesthetic words.

4)    Select the language that supports others to look for what they fancy instead of what they dislike. Remember the law of attraction – you get more of what you set your thought on. Thus, help others to place their focus on wanted results.

5)    Assume that together you will be successful. This presents a positive tone and it clearly indicates your expectations. Everyone has the tendency to live up or down to expectations so it’s important to set expectations. When speaking, articulate yourself in an optimistic instead of in a pessimistic manner.

6)    Use language that is regular with your actions. If your actions are not fitting, your language will be diluted and taken as simply hot air. Remember to ‘walk the talk’.

7)    Be apparent as you can and make sure that your listeners have recognized the meaning you projected. “Say what you mean and mean what you say.

8)    Instead of saying Yes but… try saying “Yes and...” when someone offers a suggestion; saying “Yes but” seems that you are canceling a person’s suggestion.

9)    Never assume so ASK. Do not attempt to mind-read. Ask the needed questions and  find out what’s really going in instead of assuming things.

10)    Be humorous. Share an appropriate joke and the view the humorous side of the situations. Humor can fortify relationships.
