The business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in the Philippines, specifically the IT sector, is growing by as much as 25% per year. The best thing also is that many businessmen and investors see the country as the “next Asian dragon”.
That’s according to the Commissioner of the Commission on Information and Communication Technology, Ivan John Enrile Uy. He added that a lot of the world’s largest companies outsource their businesses to the Philippines, which considerably boosts up the IT-BPO industry in the country.
In 2010, the Philippines earned over US$9.1 billion in export revenues, and the BPO industry alone has employed about 525,000 people.
The Commissioner, who attended the Negros Occidental First ICT Summit last week, singled out Bacolod as the 3rd Next Wave City in the country for business process outsourcing. This is, of course, a good achievement for the local government in Bacolod to be shortlisted as one of the top 100 cities in the world for best outsourcing destination.
Uy added that the goal of this office is to strengthen other cities outside Metro Manila, in their preparedness and readiness to provide comprehensive outsourcing solutions to entrepreneurs and business owners from around the world
This will translate to more economic growth and increasing further opportunities to other key cities of the country. The strategy will also help a lot to maximize the world-class skills and capabilities of Filipinos in many regions and cities throughout the Philippines.
As of this report, there are now about 20% of the IT-BPO industry that’s situated outside the major BPO hubs such as Manila and Cebu. Everyone can expect this trend to continue in the coming years.
The Commissioner stated that the highly regarded international research firm, Tholons, has listed Manila and Cebu as number 4 and 9, respectively, in their 2010 Top 100 Cities in the World for Outsourcing Services. Making also in the said list are Davao (no. 68), Sta. Rosa, Laguna (88), Iloilo (98), and Bacolod at number 100.
There construction of new facilities and outsourcing offices in Negros Occidental alone is on-going, and the local government projected new job opportunities that will go as many as 41,000.
